About
Comp Team “PREP” Add On:
- USSS Age Categories: 2nd Year U14s
- Grades 7-8
Program Offerings:
2 Day Add-on: Year Round
The Prep Team is a new option for middle school athletes who are motivated and desire more training and racing preparation. Athletes on the Prep Team must be returning ASC skiers with prior experience in the programs. For eligibility on the Prep Team, athletes must be registered with Devo 3 day before joining “prep”, proficient on classic waxable skis (one full winter racing), and are proficient on rollerskis (have completed a summer of rollerskiing).
Athletes who fall in these age categories and have no prior experience rollerskiing, but would like to learn to rollerski will spend a summer doing rollerski development and skill building. When athletes can safely demonstrate proficiency on rollerskis, consideration for joining the Prep Team sessions during fall dryland will be given per coach discretion.
The Prep Team will train under the direction of the Competition Head Coach during add on practices while maintaining an age-appropriate volume and skills-based approach. In alignment with the USSS Development Model, this team serves as a transition for advanced athletes seeking a more focused training environment. This program is intentionally structured to provide a smaller athlete:coach ratio and focused sessions alongside the freeskiing and games that this age group uses to develop kinesthetic awareness and precision on skis. Athletes on the Prep Team are encouraged to race in all local races and travel to team regional events.
Please contact the Competition Head Coach (Bernie Nelson) and Nordic Director (Gus Johnson) to discuss if this program is right for your athlete. Registration will come in the form of a quickbooks invoice from ASC once vetting and acceptance is completed.
This program is right for you if:
- You have completed a full summer of rollerskiing with ASC or another ski club.
- You are proficient on rollerskis. Can stop, jump, slow down, and ski in tight groups.
- You are motivated to train OYO outside of team training.
- You train with a watch and are responsible for timing intervals and meeting the team.
- You set goals with the guidance of your coaches and regularly assess your progress.
- You keep a training log and read the weekly emails for schedules and education.
- You are a proficient classic skier who has done a full winter training on waxables.
Athletes on the Prep Team:
- Own their own rollerskis, boots, and poles. Skate and Classic.
- Own their own skate and classic skis. Are proficient classic skiers on wax!
- Are self-sufficient and prepared for practice. Comfortable asking questions!
- Love to train in a team environment and want to contribute to the team culture with both Comp and Devo.

Our athletes rise to the top of the Far West Division and do extremely well regionally and nationally at the highest competition levels. We consistently qualify more athletes for the Far West Junior National team than any other regional program.
Our mission as a non-profit training facility is to keep costs affordable for our athletes. In 2018, we celebrated our 90th year of winter sports excellence. We’ve been raising champions at Auburn Ski Club since 1928!
ASC Training Center hosts some of the major Far West Nordic qualifying races each season on the Comp/Devo Team’s home trails. Our 25+ km trail system features FIS-homologated 5km, 2.5km, and 1.2km courses.
As the top training and racing venue in the western U.S., we have hosted the XC Junior Nationals five times, the USSA Supertour twice, the NCAA Nationals, and the US Biathlon Nationals. Our location on Donner Summit also means our teams are the first ones on the snow at the beginning of the season and the last ones off in the Spring!
